Decoding is the recovery
of previously encoded
data.
In the diagram, the push
buttons ENCODE decimal
to binary.
The gates DECODE the
binary and turn on the
decimal indicators.
Gate 1 recognises when
the least significant
bit is high and the
adjacent bit is low.
The inverter turns the
low into a high, so that
gate 1 has two high
inputs.
